NPI Application Help
The website works best in Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and higher and Firefox versions 2.0 and higher. Users may experience issues with other browsers and are recommended to use the browsers listed above. It is recommended that browser windows be opened using the icon on the desktop to avoid shared browser sessions. Some browsers share sessions regardless of how the browser is opened. Please check with the browser's vendor about session management. When NPPES detects multiple browsers open within the same session, NPPES will terminate the session to protect the data in NPPES. Data entered will be lost and will need to be re-entered. Use of the Back and Forward browser buttons could result in loss of all the information entered. Users should use the Next and Previous buttons provided on the application to navigate between the pages of the application.

Welcome Page / User Menu

Important Info: User IDs cannot be changed. Once you have successfully chosen a User ID and submitted the record, this User ID will remain tied to your record and will not be changed. The password can be changed only once every 24 hours. After each successful password change, the Change NPI Password button will be disabled for 24 hours. If more than one password change is required within 24 hours, please contact the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203 for assistance.

Functionality is permitted based on the status in the NPI Status field:

Active: If your NPI Status is Active, you can View/Modify your NPI data, change your password, change your secret question, view a printer friendly version of your application or request an NPI Assignment notification. Please contact the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203 if you have any questions or wish to deactivate your NPI.

Send E-mail Notification button: If this button is enabled, you can click on it and an NPI Assignment notification will be e-mailed to the e-mail address contained on the Contact Person page. If the button is disabled, make sure that an e-mail address exists on the Contact Person page. If a change request is being processed, this button will be disabled until processing is completed.

Pending: If your NPI Status is Pending, you are only permitted to view the information on the Welcome page for your NPI record. After your application is processed and your NPI is assigned, additional options will be available. If the contact person has not received the provider's NPI via e-mail within 15 working days of submitting the application, please contact the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203.

Deactivated: If your NPI Status is Deactivated, you are only permitted to view the information on the Welcome page for your NPI record. You may not update NPI data for a deactivated NPI. Please contact the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203 if you wish to reactivate your NPI.

If you receive the following message "Due to system upgrades, the application is missing required fields. Please review the application and complete any required fields that are missing. Click on Help for additional information.", click the View/Modify NPI Data button. As you click the Next button on each page of the application, a message will appear informing you of any missing data for that page allowing you to update the page.
